LL Wolf 1963 Aimophila totonaca July 22 12 mi. N. Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico found group of 3-4 singing birds spread at 25+ yards from each other on eroded & stream dissected oak & weed & grass hillside. Singing bird collected was on dead branch canopy of 10 foot oak. John Hubbard characterized song like this dit dit whut whut chipchip chip chip set set drill song often given in parts without drill. This is full song. Hesitant & deliberate in beginning. July 23 7 mi. N. Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico In weedy grassland with scattered emergent shrubs & woody weed stems. Ground cover is approx. 75%. Grass up to 15-18 inches tall, but averages less than 12 inches. Singing at 0500 bunch dead branch on stalk 3 feet high. Another bird began singing to S ~ 75 yards + 1st bird flies to NW 100 yards. Sings then to spot halfway between 2 perches. Singing flight just before landing on 3rd perch then just continued regular song upon landing. While preening gives occasional high sharp tweet notes when introductory notes - usually in pairs. 3rd perch is in top of 2 1/2 foot shrub which is 1 1/2- 2 feet above level of grass.
