June 27 1 mi. W. Ft. Huachuca, Cochise Co., Arizona
at least 2 singing ♂⊘. One in overgrazed grassland partly grown up with perennial weeds. also scattered patches of Scaaton grass + mesquite. ⊕ singing from 10-1 foot above ground in bare (dead limbs) of mesquite. dropped into grass at base of mesquite + foraged. generally on open spots.
tried to record, but battery too low so collected bird.
2nd ⚘⊘ is in fenced area with grass foot or more high.
sings from dead shrubs or taller weed stalks. flight song generally given just before landing & seems to be same as perched song. songs also given from ground. heard flight, just at end of sexual chase. apparently ⊕ chasing ⊘, started from pair together in grass then fight feet over top of grass + drop back down.
birds (this pair) have been seen in area 60x40 yds. ⊕ alternates singing with foraging. Generally song bouts last only 2-5 songs.
⊘ make appearance only infrequently, mostly foraging in grass.
no signing young or feeding young.- I wonder if they have started nesting yet.
When singing ⊘ elevates head only slightly above normal sitting posture. when singing ⊘ rears is always on bare limb.
0710- both members of pair fly to near field - one follows other by 1-2 sec, lands slightly further than 1st both land on exposed grass stalk. one then drops into grass. action of 1st not seen.
