LL Wolf 1964 Amphila aestivalis June 17 Lm 5, Baykin Springs, Angelina Natl. Fawot, Jasper Co., Texas Herd strange song so tried to find bird. Consisted of one or two of a variety of introductory notes followed by a trill. One I render: S - .... chatter fouage Herd another bird nearby giving an excited chatter sounds like trill of Chipping Sparrow but slower + change of pitch near end. Saw this bird (??) moving along ground thru grass. Stopped once & reached up several to pick at blade of grass. Seemed to be getting insects. chatter flight duet just as it started to rain I went flying by chirring. Lift in small leafy shrub then flew on. Total flight 150-200 yards. Herd two birds chittering one after the other. Finally both flew into same area & lit within 5-10 feet. Then both gave long chittering calls - sounded like a pair reunion duet. ? then disappeared & ?? remained for 15-20 sec. on dead pine branch perch 10 feet above ground. June 18 Lm 5, Baykin Springs, Jasper Co., Texas Into area at 0545. Cant hear any P-w Sp. singing. Walked thru area until 0630 when finally heard ?? singing from N of where saw yesterday. Chased this bird & finally got some recordings. He moved to S for 50-100 yards + then slightly east. Recorded while ?? sitting on dead pine limb about 10 feet above ground. Then flew off SE. I played the recordings + 10-15 sec. later ?? flew by 30-40 yards to S & lit, but flew almost immediately directly away to south.
