LL Wolf June 1964 Amphila aestivalis June 23 1/2 mi. S. Boykin Springs, Jasper Co., Texas 10:09 - young begging > 30 sec. adult on stub chipping more frequently than just prior to begging. 10:11 - adult leaves stub & other flies up into pine furthest g me + sings once (8?). then silent. 10:12 - down to dead limb closer to trunk 15' up (1" dia). 10:13 - flies off to N prom. to ground after one more soft song. 10:15 - adult forages part me in grass walks thru dense grass when moving slowly but regularly, hops across open spaces + when moving faster. Heard craching of grasshoppers + then saw adult pick up 4-5 inches at weed top. Moved & continued on. 10:17 - flushed insect + flew after it just over top of grass. Dropped back into grass after ~2 feet. 10:19 - up into lowest branches (10' up) of pine between me + nest. had one (2?) grasshopper in bill. 8? sang just behind me. 10:24.5 - dropped to ground at base of this tree. now silent. 10:25 - y/g, fed. - ? 10:26.5 - ? up into tree just east of me. 8? sang once + gave short, soft chitter series. then left. can hear + keep notes from behind mine direction of 8? 10:32 - after I walked to take photos of nest adult (?!) flew up in tree to NE + began chirping. When I returned to observing area she circled on both sides + behind me before flying 2' into swamp oak ~5' away, there into pine rows of me where silent. 10:36 - dropped into grass at base of this pine. 10:38 - young begging but not sure if fed. 10:39 - another short bout of begging.
