Aimophila aestivalis
June 21 Levi S. Boileau Springs, Jasper Co., Texas
Walked over to spot which is 50-100 feet N of 3/4-D
+ 100 yards E of junction. Birds seem to have
reached extent of territory in this direction.
0950 - M #3 begins singing from NE part of territory.
Within 2-3 minutes M #3 begins singing + M #3 is quiet.
0959 - flushed bird from near area in M #3 where first flushed
this morning. Flowed off to WNW chipping, lit on dead pine
limb 5' up.
1002 - bird flew to NE (so 50 feet NW of where flushed) on tip
of pine stub (18" long, 12' up, + 1/2" dia). This is a 2nd bird
likely the M. M is chipping about 1/2 secs, M sitting quietly.
M moves 5 or 15 feet. Then 5 feet more, now on live branch
just below middle left.
1018 - noted another chipping adult in center of shrub from which
1st came (prob. bird I have been referring to as M is same as
one 1st flushed). This 2nd flew up to dead stub (6' up 1" dia)
where sitting with tail cocked spreading + chipping. 1st flew
toward this bird + at first NE of where 1st flushed. Then
moved on - to where?
1020 - series of chittering notes from shrub clump. At each series
the bird in the open + chipping begins to flick tail + boo
on perch while changing directions. Bird noted at 1023 moving by hops
then goes between shrub clumps. Moved around outer edge of
clump on ground.
1025 - M #1 singing, heard another series of chitter notes
from in shrub.
