24 LLW01/6 1964 Amphipila aestivalis June 21 Lairs: Boykin Springs, Jasper Co., Texas 0825 walked onto area of #3. one bird flew down to base of shrub clump. began chipping. Sam standing nearby between 2 birds that are chipping. 0828- on #2 gives one 'continuous song from just across road (314-D). In corner of plot bounded by "mini" road + 314-D (area#3-se-map) found bird that had dropped to ground. was chipping occasionally as it hopped three paces moving from shrub clump to shrub clump. At some time can hear another chip close to road- probably a f + fledgling. 0842- heard on #1 give several songs. 0844- adult flew up from area near where last seen + perched on dead pine limb (10'up; 1" dia.). chipping rapidly + bill-wiped 5-6 times in succession then twice more after short pause. tail is cocked, feathers slightly fluffed. changed to near end of perch - chipping decreased. Still tail going from slightly to nearly fully cocked (50 to 150), up to another twip (1/2" dia) while still chip, tail cock + down forward in body axis. 0847- fly to E + perches 10'up at end of 15" stub (1 1/2"dia) when seen+clip. thought I heard another chip to S. 0855- another adult flies into dead limb perch (6'up) + gives several chips. f still perching with occasional time when tail fully cocked + much rocking of head & body. 2nd bird flies on to S. then song from there answered by M #1. f flies by several jumps over in that direction. probably very close to 314-D.
