Aimophila sunivhrosti
August 15 5 mi E Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Next came in at 0855. Both members of pair landed on S side of nest. I gradually came closer & closer to nest on this side further away from me. M(?) kept flying to near F & then off tos. Finally I looked & just above ground & remained still & silent. Then hopped down to nest. Preferred & perched just above F. flew to small bush just to W of nest & lit in top. Then dropped down so essentially out of sight, but could see bushes move. M then flew off to S. F settled on nest. Heard soft chip notes, but not sure if given by M or F.
Nest: 20 cm from top rim to ground outside diameter 80-90 cm inside 50-60mm depth 65 mm.
Placed near base of 3 foot shrub. Just above where multiple stems emerge from ground.
Rather bushy exterior of dead grass & weed stems incorporated few dead items that were growing up stems. lined with finer plant material, but still fairly coarse. no soft, fine lining.
1 young + 1 egg when found. Egg dull or off white. Hatched before could be obtained both young preserved. Collected M & parent.
Again today saw only pairs or family groups. As the breeding season is still in full swing I would guess that this species only rarely, if ever, forms flocks during the breeding season.
