LLWol/ 1963 Aimophila sumichrasti August 15 5 mi. E. Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. all nest-building activity continues with me 15-20 feet away & sitting 074 - ♀ in to small shrub, followed by silent ♂ who flew to tall shrub just N. Sang one song after several soft notes while ♀ at nest. ♂ flew back to small shrub & left. ♂ followed about 15-20 sec later after giving another song. 0715 - ♀ in. ♂ to small shrubs 10 yards SE of nest then to ♀ leaves flies to tall shrub & sings three striper songs & then starts solo chatter. Is about 3/4 way up in shrub (2 feet) & works way up to top. Sings twice & flies to SE. 0721 - ♂ sings solo chatter after bird in territory to US has sang three solo chatter phrases. ♀ has not yet returned to nest since 0715. stop nest-building 0740 - surrounding birds still give occasional series of solo chatters & duet chatters, but not for sure have heard any vocalizations from nest-building pair. Not sure of extent of their territory. 0745 - another bird has appeared at nest site for ½ hour so I am leaving. 0800 - as I walked off path thru thorn forest to collect ♂ singing I found another nest of Sumichrast ♀ . This ♀ flewbird from nest when I was 6-12" away. She left silently to SE where began chirping. ♂ came in to 30 feet away & sang ♂+♀ reaction at nest is young
