LL Wolf (1967) Aimophila sumichrasti August 14 3 mi. E. Tehuantepec Oaxaca 2/3 way up in 12-15 foot tree which is essentially deplicate. One sitting closer to trunk than other, closest was about 1 foot from trunk. Both were several feet above canopy of shrub layer beneath. Happened that chattering by pair probably is vocal territorial defense. Left for short time. 0645 - found pair 2/3 way up in 8 foot tree. Pair across cut area (prog #1) chattered + was answered by pair I am watching. This occurred several more times + also in response to pair to west. Also have chattered after each of 3 times John has fired gun. 0710 - flushed a bird prob. 2 of pair 3 - from on or near ground. flew up onto 3 feet high branch + bill-wiped. then flew off. Herb layer vegetation is very dense & averages 2 feet ± tall. This means foraging birds on or near ground are impossible to see. Apparently all this herb layer comes up in response to summer rains. Found another pair - watched one bird fly across cut area to land 2- feet from other bird. Both chattered. Heard chatter across cut + bird from pair flew back across. 2nd just changed perches + bill-wiped. 1st minute it flew across open area + when arrived in shrubs chatter not heard. Then both birds flew further away from open area
