LLWOLF 1964 Atimophila rufescens August 9 5 mi. E. Cuernavaca, 5900+ft., Morelos Mexico 0725- found pair 4 along little used road running N from main road. foraging on or near ground in 6-8" weeds. M worked up into nearby tree when churred then flew off 15+ yds. to W + continued churring then sang one short song. F first appeared chasing a Melozine keeneri in low shrub. Melozine flew off 5-10-feet only to be chased again by M which flew over to where Melozine landed. Melozine Then up to main limb of nearby tree (5-6ft) & disappeared. rufescens worked up into adjacent tree then flew back into shrubby area. Next saw one bird so dropped to ground in 4-6 inch weeds + foraged. Hopped along occasionally using dead weed stalks as slightly elevated perches. Once jumped up several inches + pecked at live weed stalk 8 times fell + knocked it down. >75% of time watched foraging where only herb layers but did move around base of shrubs + up 1-2 feet into shrubs. churr / 0742- churring notes from pair 4 followed by squeal just E. of where 1st found foraging. (75+ yds. N of road near boundary of 7+ 4). churr / 0750- one of pair 4 flew to dead limbs 15 feet in tree along little-used road. song perch / set churring for 30+ sec. + then flew off to W. + disappeared. perch / 0800- M singing from bare portion horizontal branch just down from top of 20+ foot tree. 0802- flew off to E + sang 50+ yds away. Then about 1/2 way back + sang from expanded trunk 2/3 way up 20 foot tree. Flew further to W. to or near ground. F also flew over to same area. sft squeal / 10+ sec. often she arrived Ward short solo of squeal - tzeee. pair / 0825- found pair 8 (next pair SE of pair 6). first located by squeal. then watched one move up toward top of 25+ foot tree. Pecked at bare 4" stub of small branch then wound slightly higher before dropping back down to peck at same spot.
