Himophila outescens August 9 Fri E Guanacasta 5900+ ft, Morlos, Mexico 0550-821 singing when I arrive. A=--2 B=--2- A,B,A,B,A,A,B,A,B,B,B,B,A,A,- chorus at 0555 A,A,B,A,A,B,B,A,A,B,A,B,A,A*B,A-,A,A,A,E,B,A,B,B,B,A--,A, B,A,B*,B,A,B,B,A,B,A,B,A,B,A,G,A,A,B,A,B,A,B,A,B,A,B,then chur notes, A,B,A, quiet at 0557 - bird singing 100+ yds. 50 of road t may be 2/. sang 16 songs in the 1 minute timed - representative of whole series of songs. 0620- found pair foraging in grass & short woods at Nedge road. flushed up into nearby shub + then flew off to NE, or up into 20 foot dead tree + sang then flew off to E. As I approached 807 flew into that shrub + chur then squeal as working for enteros, at least one wing-flicking slightly swinging spread tail from side to side. Both may have been commuted with moving into shub. then both descended to ground in grazed, short grass area where foraged on ground. both ran thru area + both - one after other- flew up into 25 foot tree. starts from 1/3 way up + worked to top. flew down to shrubs + sang song Type A. flew to W side of rice + then flew to W beyond & them to top of 20 foot dead tree (same as earlier) + song Type A. Suddenly assumed erect posture then wing+tail-flicked several times before flying farther to W to 10+foot tree from which disappeared after hopping along bare limb near trunk (4" dia). 0700-0727 - still singing almost continuously. - both Type A+B songs with Type B predominant. Used three different perches. At least 2 were exposed perches on dead or bare branches - horizontal + 1 3/4 way up in 25 foot trees. Couldn't see him on last perch.
