LLW014 1964 Aimophila rufescens August 8 5mi E. Cumanaca, 5900+ ft, Morlos, Mexico 1115- ♂ 6 singing at SE edge of fern. ♀ flew way up in 8 foot shrub in center of shrub thicket, flew off to NE as I approach. flew again to near fence I hear squeal. no sign of either bird, but at 10:16 both fly into tree (6 feet up) + squeal. one followed by ♂ ♀♂ by 20± feet flew to SW to area where ♂ was singing earlier. ♀♅ bird then begins squeal + stops (before arrival of ♂♂ bird, both move low in tree (1-2 feet up) + disappear behind shrubs. 1127 - lone bird flew silently (10-15 feet up) 50± yds. back to former foraging area. long, direct flight but still floppy + with toe pumping. 1130 - ♂ 6 begins singing at SE edge of territory, singing song type ♪: -v about 1/4 sec. songtype B rate 1142 - still singing at ~ 1/5 sec. flight squeals 1144.5 - ♂ flew 75 yds to NE - flight direct + just floppy. I had given one squeal + then another just before ♂ flew. louder squeal as ♂ arrived. counter song 1146 - ♂ 6 begins to sing (type B) from NE edge of grave. ♂ 7 sings several times. On dead branch 3/4 way to top of 25 foot tree. flew down to SW as I approach + hear squeal then perched. forage 1204-1207 - watched one + for 1½ min. both members of pair ♂ 6 foraging on ground at NE edge of grave. mostly in weeds < 4 inches tall but one bath into 12+ inch weeds. still stayed ground. counter sing 1211- ♂ 6 sings three consecutive, loud songs - ♂ 7 started singing (1 minute earlier. then ♂ 6 moved to SW side of fence + sing regularly until 1213. left area at 1215.
