Aimophila rufescens
August 7 Sui.E. Cumanaca, 5900± ft., Moulas, Mexico
↑ up onto dead branch 6± inches off ground where preened.
σ worked toward lava hill in praying. ↑ then up into tree to
see possibly in response to chip notes from that area. Worked
into top of tree (30± feet) where sat wing + tail flicking, changing
directions + pitches, + head raising. σ flew up into small tree
(6' up) at wedge of lava hill & gave squawk although 2 are
separated by 50± yds. σ did not squawk but changed trees.
song ↑ moved up slightly higher, & sang. ↓ dropped down to shrub
(beneath tree where moved about nervously (wing-tail-head flicks)
then into 8 foot shrub, 10± yds closer to lava hill where moved
about nervously then sat preening - σ had dropped & ground
& moved by short flights hops along wedge of lava hill then flew
over to shrub where ↓ sat. landed 3± feet below ↑ & squawked. ↓
rapidly changed directions or pitch twice thru 180° accompanied
by alternate bouts of flicking vigorously right, then left, right, left wings.
also spread + contracted tail. σ did not seem to be contributing to
squawk. σ then moved up to just below ↑ & another squawk. This
time ↓ turned & bent slightly down to face σ & spread tail.
wing flicking very reduced & ↓ again did not seem to squawk. Unable
to see if σ wing-flicking but as he is in center of bush I
doubt it. After sitting quietly for short time both birds flew over to
ground 10± yds. to N. where squawk on arrival, both squawking.
chirp chirp notes from one of pair #7 & one of pair #2 moving in
that direction. Then chirp notes from pair #5 & pair #2 flies to
them & hear squawk. Pair #2 then continues towards road along
