LL Wolf 1967 Amazilia rufescens August 7 5 mi E Cuernavaca, 5400 ft. Morales Mexico both generally flew up together + stayed close together while I could see them. Lost track of them at 0625. All foraging seen done on, or < 6-8 inches above ground. Occasionally flew up seemed to pick at weed foliage, but may have been changing positions in deeper herb layer than usual or crossing some obstacle. Never saw more than 2 birds together. 0645-0730 - heard pair square from edge of shrub thicket on N side of road (pair #2). Then quiet followed by another squeal. Both then foraged up lava outcrop into thicket (away from road). ?? singing from on or near ground as forage. Heard churr notes from one of pair #5 + ? of pair #2 moved up into subcanopy of trees + moved off in that direction. ? intruder may not have left as ?? moved up onto horizontal bare limb 10 ft above ground + sang several times. ? then flew to W side of lava hill + squeal after ?? flew over to same area. I moved over them + found both birds foraging in 2-6 inch herb layer vegetation - mostly grass + grazed by cattle. Moved back closer to shrub thicket + foraged where herb layer mostly of weeds + up to 8 inches tall. Move mostly on ground, but do go up onto lava rocks + shrub branches. Picked usually at ground, but occasionally also at leaves + flowers of weeds. Often had to reach or flutter up to peck. Several times seemed to peck at leaf as fluttered down off lava rock or branch of shrub. Once bird moved rapidly from basal interior of a 3 foot shrub. Did not seem to forage, but just hopped thru. Then both out into weeds. Several squeal performances as pair came flying together after being separated by >10-15 feet while foraging.
