Lh Wolff 1967 Amphilola rutescens August 6 5 mi. N. Cuernavaca, 7000 ft., Morelos, Mexico Area is pine-oak woodland with pines up to 75 ft. tall. In many places trees form almost closed canopy, shrub layer is scattered + mostly of young oaks + one other species of shrub. Herb layer in scattered grasses + annuals - ground carpeted with pine needles. August 7 5 mi E. Cuernavaca, 5900 ft., Morelos, Mexico 0608 - 09 singing as he foraged along ground in area where trees & shrubs removed for electric line. Hopped + short flights to progress thru 7-8 inch herb layer vegetation. Occasionally perched on dead weed stems (horizontal) while changing foraging positions. Walked between 2 patches of 4' foot weeds, but stayed in open areas. Flew 5yds. to W. + dropped to ground. As I approached one followed by 2nd flew up into shrub thicket where gave churring calls - sounded like both birds were calling. Then quiet with occasional chrrs. As I changed positions to see dead area, one flew up from dead area into shrub thicket 5yds to W., both then slightly further to W + on to dead, horizontal tree branch 2' feet off ground. One dropped lower to ground + flew off to W. Other stayed up + gave tail + wing-flicking with head raising movements. Then flew to W. & then walked up into dead shrub when sang from exposed perch 5' ft. above ground. Again before he flew went thru wing + tail flicks with head raising. Head is raised when tail raised + wings flicked. Then moved off again to W., which I followed (or pushed) then the pair moved 100+ yds tow along dead area beneath electric lines. Except for when one was singing they seemed to function as a pair &
