Aimophile notescens
August 7 5mi E Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico 5900+ ft.
Branches of a nearby 8' shrub and began chirring. ♂ flew over
& chirring ceased. Both in shrub together then ♂ moved off to NW
while ♀ remained. ♂ began singing - varying volume & sometimes
sounded 75+yds away while actually only 25-30yds. Singing from
low perch, but not visible. ♀ remains quietly on perh + then
begins running. moves to subcanopy of tree from which ♂ (♂?st?)
singing then works up into canopy layers & disappears (0735).
forage 0755 - flushed another pair up from ground. at least one foraging
and
in open grassy area with less layer 2-4 inches tail. flushed into nearby
shrub thickly & gradually worked over up into canopy of 25 foot tree in
the thickest. one set or dead limb raising + lowering tail - in line
with + above body axis. crown feathers mostly partly erected. legs nearly
fully extended so bird will above perch. also move body then 20+/-
larva in horizontal. also seems to have ruke partly extended beyond normal
posture position when pushed with tail + body forming - straight line.
squad & squeal 0801- one flew across road to tree. 2nd soon (10-15 sec) followed giving
chir as flew across. then squeal "duet"
0810- have heard two more squeal "duets" from this pair but can't see
either bird. ♂ sang two songs at 0808.
forage 0825 - same pair dropped to ground & foraged along nearly bare path at
edge of shrubby growth. moved by hopping - pecked at ground some
times. one moved on tail to water puddle in road & flushed from edge.
duo 0933- (same pair) - heard chirring noise of same type from at least 2
separated birds. then squeal while one continued to chew
short song by ♂ + another short song at 0935.
