LLWOLF 1964 Amorphila rufescens August 3 5 mi. E. Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico on other side of road while ♀ Varied Bunting flew down to pick up grit. No antagonism although rufescens only 15-20 inches away + looking in direction of bunting. 10:38 - bird flew from tree side of road (may have earlier gone back) + heard squalling sound like young being fed. Adults moved away from road. ♂ E + ♂ sang. Still singing at 10:52 when I left. August 4 5 mi. E. Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico 5900 ft. 06:00 - found same group of three as watched early yesterday (2ad+1yp.) recorded 2 squeal reinicos - each time occurred as one bird was chirping + then squeals, still not sure if over both participants. 2nd squeal occurred on or near ground + at least one adult then foraged off on ground in area at edge of woods where only vegetation was short, grazed herb layer. Played back a churn series followed by squeal + 2 birds flew up into nearby tree where squealed. Then flew 15+ yds to another tree where worked in canopy changing positions rapidly. After working to new top (5-20 feet up) one then other dropped abruptly to ground foraged on ground. One then worked up into dead, nearly horizontal limb 7 feet up. Perched (rest?) then flew off to NE. Where ♂ began singing. Another ♂ (15+ yds. to S) sang three consecutive songs while 1st ♂ was singing. I played back the squeal again + two birds flew into shrub thicket 30+ yds away + squealed. Then changed positions slightly + another squeal. 07:25 - another pair - ♂ singing from tree (25 feet up) in area of 75% to closed canopy shrub thicket. ♀ (other adult) moved up into dead lower.
