LKWolf 1963 Aimophila rufescens August 3 20 mi. SE. Morelia, Michoacan Sing / Sang occasionally from ground. Often would say 3-4 songs in succession & then be silent for extended period. Scratching / Several times saw bird making backward hopping motions & saw up move backward. Looked as if foraging like a Brown Towhee, but bird was always partly obscured by vegetation & could not tell for sure. flight / When flying up from ground into shrub nearby flight was very floppy in manner of Song Sparrow perhaps even more exaggerated especially pumping of the tail. When it flew after I tried to collect flight was direct with no flop. As went downhill went into long straight glide with wings horizontal & tail slightly spread. flight / glide / habitat / Area on this slope is less open & much of upgrowth where oaks removed are oak seedlings. Some legumes & other shrubs. Shrubs + trees make 50-75% closed canopy, but neither there is > 50%. A few pines scattered on hillside. I think this second bird watched is an unmated ♂ - much more singing than other ♂♂ & no silent or any other of this species seen in immediate area.
