LLW864 1963 August 3 20 mi. SE Morelia, Michoacan - could. Amphila rufescens I was following + recording never sang from top of oaks + only once was out in exposed position. Generally song from 1/2 to 3/4 way up (15-30 feet) on bare limb in interior of tree. Often worked up from lower height before starting to sing. Just before I was collected it was sitting in exposed position on horizontal oak branch about 18 feet above ground. Area covered by this bird was 100+ x 50+ yards. All cut-over oak woodland. Some small legumes have come in where oaks cut out. Grass 4-6 inches tall + in gully weeds + shrubs. Collected another singing bird about 15 feet up on dead terminable of a legume branch. Was markedly exposed to view. Found a 2nd singing bird on opposite hill above camp. Sang persistently for 20+ minutes. Recorded approx. 5 min. then down to ground to forage. Move by hopping on ground. Foraged mostly in areas with no canopy. Ground layer was 2-6 inches tall + included both grasses + legumes. Bird foraged by hopping along + picking at ground or low vegetation. Occasionally worked around base of shrub. Once watched him chase bug of some sort for ~ 8" before catching. Caught a 1"+ caterpillar which was bitten on rock + mandibulated only once three mouth before being swallowed.
