Aimophila rufescens
July 27 9 mi. SW. Aultan, Salisco
(See journal)
July 31 various localites ~ 10 mi. N Guadalajara, Jalisco.
In open, legume-free studded, grassy hillsides in
Barranca de Obletos found Rusty Sparrows to be fairly
common. Spaced birds singing from elevated perches
usually on dead limb, but often well below top of tree
or brush. In general do not sing from top. Recorded
songs of two birds. In a more densely wooded area
along stream bed down the hillside from these birds
was a singing bird A. quinquestrata. Only foraging
seen was by hopping along ground.
Aug. 2 10 mi. SE. Maida, Michoacan
One flew up from ground in open oak-covered hillside, herb
layer dense in patches. Lb on 2' stump then to another stump
5 feet away. Back to ground to forage along slope. Flew up
to lower (6-8') branches of oak. Sat 1-2 feet from
trunk where no leaves on branch. Preened in sun
for 5+ minutes. Interrupted preening once to sing two
continuous phrases of song. Back to ground & lost
from view.
