Aimophila outcips
Dec 19 Zais-Molina basin, 1000+ ft. St. Catherine Pts., Pinolo, Arizona
On rocky, oak-grassland hillsides - with scattered Prosopis, Yucca, + Rosa - found Rufous-crowned to be fairly common. Located birds mainly by "Dear, dear" call, but also was able to "schuss" them in.
5 birds collected. Collected one bird and within two minutes 4 others appeared in the same bush. They moved from the bush to talus slope just above + back to bush. Finally two flew off down canyon + two flew just up hillside when they continued foraging among rocks beneath a species of shrubby composite. Collected another, both had incompletely ossified skulls.
When following mixed flocky sparrows later in morning found several other "pairs" of Rufous-crowned. Not sure of sex, but generally two birds were together. Heard 2 birds separated by 50 yards alternately give "dear, dear" call with long addition of extra staccato notes. Two birds sounded as if moving closer together, but I was unable to follow them + do not know outcome. It seemed to me that "pairs" were spread along the stream corridor, but this may result from birds being hidden for periods of time.
