Aimophila quinquestrata
July 14 saw 1 card Canyon Wren near position #1, along
crest of hill over series of rock outcrops.
In 3/2 minutes watching a pair - one of birds earlier
seen just uphill, led by long gray rectrix - foraging
on north hill (south facing) They spent half or more
of their time in the small trees (up to 5-6 feet)
In "subcanopy" where [illegible] limbs + some foliage.
Progress by hopping from branch to branch perching at
surrounding foliage. Did not see any captures. Also
some time on ground. These birds alternated the 2
substrates, but greater 70% time in shrub layer.
Did not restrict to one species of tree & did not
only choose legumes. Also forage on fallen dead
shrub layer vegetation.
0835 - bird flew from crest to land in top of 40 foot
decid gully. Just below landing (only time seen) flight
was very floppy. Bird tail at tail cocked [illegible] well
above horizontal. Maintained this with feathers
fluffed for 30+ sec. Then gradually tail lowered
& body smoothed, probably an alarm reaction.
0837 - bird singing from crest. Another just below
crest in subcanopy of 8 foot legume. This second
bird giving tzeeb, & chug notes while first was
singing. Singer left & was followed 30 min later
by 2nd bird.
