LL wolf 1963 Aimophila notosticta August 9 4 mi. sw. Matatlan, Oaxaca, Mexico. 2022-juv. Bill brown above, yellow-brown below. iris brown. legs light gray-brown. came in to "schuss". In heavy oak scrub on rocky hill side. dense herb layer except where rocks exposed. only few 1st minute feathers on back. stomach c grit, seeds + looked like a little insect fragments. habitat John reported finding three birds + I found at least 2. All in scrub oak on rocky hill sides. In spots scruboak is not the dominant vegetation, but it is all shrubby with appearance of Chaparral. Except for juvenile collected all were singing OO?. Song is similar in quality to Rufous-crowned Sparrow, but does not vary as much in pitch. Starts with one or two introductory notes + then a trill-like chatter often followed by several distinct notes. habitat song August 10 Yuri, SW - Matatlan, Oaxaca. John recorded 2 OO? which I subsequently collected. Saw one silent bird, but did not collect it. Had tried to watch some behavior, but as with other birds seen this one dropped from perch in about middle of stones down on bare part of limb down to + into dense lower layer vegetation. Waited 5+ minute for bird to reappear + walked in. Bird had disappeared.
