2022-juv. Bill brown above, yellow-brown below.
iris brown. legs light gray-brown.
came in to "schuss". In heavy oak scrub on rocky
hill side. dense herb layer except where rocks exposed.
only few 1st minute feathers on back.
stomach c grit, seeds + looked like a little insect fragments.
habitat
John reported finding three birds + I found at least 2.
All in scrub oak on rocky hill sides. In spots scruboak is
not the dominant vegetation, but it is all shrubby with
appearance of Chaparral. Except for juvenile collected all
were singing OO?. Song is similar in quality to Rufous-crowned
Sparrow, but does not vary as much in pitch. Starts with one
or two introductory notes + then a trill-like chatter often
followed by several distinct notes.
habitat
song
August 10 Yuri, SW - Matatlan, Oaxaca.
John recorded 2 OO? which I subsequently collected.
Saw one silent bird, but did not collect it. Had tried
to watch some behavior, but as with other birds seen
this one dropped from perch in about middle of stones
down on bare part of limb down to + into dense lower
layer vegetation. Waited 5+ minute for bird to reappear
+ walked in. Bird had disappeared.
