LLW014 1964 3 Amophila mystacalis August 16 16 E ni SW Matatlan, 4200+ ft. Oraca, Mexico feeding On several occasions bird flew at leaf above or below it + picked at item in manner of trogon. Often apparently missed + y[c]losed item to ground. Did not return to same perch when remained in tree. Did not appear to be too successful on initial attempt but did flush insects in this way. movements / perching When working along branch - from horizontal to vertical - usually rotated 180° for each advance W SW SE. This also even when also flying to achieve new perches - especially when moving higher in vegetation. young + food On two occasions saw adult feed full grown young which shows black submolar streaks. Young croaked before parent + gaped with slight wing flutter. Once fed a tree cricket. wrong food Twice saw adults preparing prey items. Once a small item was chewed on several times + then swallowed. Other was tree cricket fed to young - (after which adult flew from ground when young was to 1+ foot up in shrub where bill wiped). Adult followed this to ground from 5+ feet up. Caught it + appeared to snap off small part. Then recaught it & repeated procedure. Then chewed it slightly while when caught + held in one while flicked head in rapid junks from side to side. Not sure of hitting cricket against substrate. Cricket then (or part of cricket) went 6-8 inches from bird which hopped over, picked it up in bill & worked it around in bill for 1-2 sec before flying up to 1-2 feet from where dropped to ground. Young also fed 1-5 feet above ground on horizontal portion of horzontal
