Amphila humeralis
July 25 Canon de Lobos, Pri. E. Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico 7000+ft.
notes coming from in shrubby thickets near adults.
0825- as I moved toward pair began pitz-a notes - very rapid + many in succession. Also treet notes - young?. Then quiet as they flew uphill 5-10 yds. One flew off to N along hillside while other flew up into tree to S.
One to N continued occasional chip + pitz-a note while bird in tree quietly foraged on side of tree (partly defoliated) closest to me. Foraged here for 3-4 minutes in canopy then flew back toward ground to N.
One appeared 5-10 ft N & one in upper 1/3 of shrubs - pitz-aing loudly.
Soon joined by 2 more so S him at once. At least only the newcomer came from downhill 10+ yds. All pitz-a loudly + worked as close as 5-6 feet away. Moving in middle 1/3 of shrubs. One then disappears & other 2 remain close calling loudly + constantly. Tail flicks while calling. Two then move uphill so 6-7 yds. uphill from me & land 1/3 E way up on 6-1 foot tree, calling loudly frequency + volume gradually diminish to nearly nothing. Both birds begin preening with occasional calling - mostly pitz-a, but few chip notes. One flies uphill into shrubs where hear treet notes. After 1 minute flies up into tree to N (5yds) where moves to exposed perch facing me. Several times gives introductory notes to song + once gave one or two drill notes. Then back to where other bird preening in bushes. Both preen for 1-2 minutes then one begins to forage. Pulls at something & other bird moves up, fogs at same or nearby object + flies off NW followed by other bird (0855)
0903- M gives two introductions to song + then trill of song.
then quiet.
0907 Two birds together fly back into some brush just uphill
