Aimophila humeralis
July 18 Cañon de Lobos, QniE. Guanacaz, Morlos, Mexico.
bird flying just downhill from me (~20 feet from 1st bird.)
lost track of exact location of both birds until heard pitza +
then chatter about slightly uphill. Birds facing at 90° to
each other and one ~6" higher. Were 12 to 15 inches apart.
both birds apparently contributing to chatter.
Bird facing to west flicked right wing during most of chatter
but twice stopped right + flicked left for 1-2 sec. Bird
facing S. did not flick wings as much but more of right than
left. Then lost track of both birds.
10:20 - bird flew into tree (3' up) about 10' uphill from me.
foraged in leaves near trunk for 5± sec. then had 1"+ caterpillar
in bill. Joined by a 2nd bird & both flew off three hundred to N.
Not possible to follow them closely.
Moved in that direction + found at least two birds giving pit-za
call. Flicked one from vine tangle 3 feet up. Other in tree on
dead branches 8-10 feet up, both fly into canopy of densely foliated
free where gave pit-za calls.
10:45 - bird foraging ~ 3 feet above ground, working primarily
along bare horizontal branchage. Moves into foliated area +
pers around. Moves toward leg before pecking. Works over to
dead horizontal branch carrying a 1"+ larva. Sits with larva
hanging from right side of bill. Then swallows + bill wipes.
Pecks at branch + bill wipes again. Sits nearly motionless on
branch giving chip,chip,chip irregularly,
