Amophila humeralis
July 17 CaƱon de Lobos 9 mi. E. Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico 4800+ ft.
Same bird also caught + ate two small crickets that he reached back + pecked off vines after moving by them. Bird would forage for 5-10 minutes then sit quietly for 2+ minutes. Both times for two birds did not coincide.
Calls during foraging were soft + harsh chip giving almost regularly while foraging. Also pit-za + pit calls when I came in or they came close (20-30') to me. Pit-za could be single or repeated up to 4 times. Also single pit. Another call giving a birds go back to foraging after pit-za calls is Chip-ip-ipip) sounds like chip with rapid, short trill. All these calls are given by both birds.
At 0917 heard 3rd bird chipping low along hill but in some thicket. Soon flew into area where pair foraging - Immediately chased to S by one bird which had previously worked to top of 15' tree. Chaser immediately returned to thicket & commenced foraging. Other bird did not join chase but continued preening on bare limb ~ 3' above ground.
1000 - same pair at SW corner of thicket. Heard another bird pitza downhill to SW. then started chatter, pair in thicket then chattering followed (5-15 sec. later) by chatter from pair downhill.
