Ainophila humeralis
July 14 Cañon de Lobos, Pui. E. Guernavaca, Morelos, Mexico
Mood off to W. where here + zeek, + soft trill notes.
0940 - found group of three birds foraging together in vines
of subcanopy + out to tips of branches of a sumac-like shrub (10')
(Seems much more woody + thunks hawin). Two flew over to trees +
shrubs (in group) 20±yds. to W. foraged here mostly in subcanopy
from 6 - 12' up. Then both back to sumac. One almost 6 pounds
worked up one trunk in hops to canopy. Out bend of branch
where picked hard at leaf. Most of foraging done by flying to
perch, pering about, + moving on or else hopping from perch to
perch in that vicinity.
All 3 birds appeared to be in adult plumage. Almost regular
chipping from foraging bird(s), but impossible to tell which one(s).
1100 - found group of 2 birds moving thru canopy zone on hillside
dominated by 15-20 foot trees which form 80-100% canopy. Dense
shrub layer + >50% shrub cover. Giving chip chip use-louder
as one flies to next tree + followed by 2nd. One dropped down to
2± feet above ground in shrub layer + moved thru at this height
until out of sight.
July 15 Cañon de Lobos, Pui E Guernavaca, Morelos, Mexico.
0600 - as we arrived could hear ravenous chatter given
from many parts of hill side at dry end of canyon. Seemed to be
mostly limited to areas which contained trees up to 20-25' tall.
In some places these formed almost closed canopy. Two groups I
saw were of 2 birds each.
