Aimophila aestivalis
June 19
1 mi S. Baykin Springs, Jasper Co, Texas
Head 10-20° below horizontal & looked in direction
of nest. Back to above horizontal - repeated several
times + then dropped to ground below pine. Can
hear occasional chips as could when in small pine.
0953 - up into small pine. ♀ over to smaller pine tofts
about 10-15 feet. Then sat on live branch 8''
above ground among needles at end tuft. Looked at
ground + generally maintained horizontal axis.
0917- ♂ flew to SW 75-100 yards + sang several
times - followed there by ♀,
0921- ♂ still singing. - appears they noticed
some disturbance likely caused by me looking for
nest.
0923- ♂ quiet.
0951- Although not quite simultaneously heard ♂♂ sing
100 ±(?) yards to SE followed by ♂ from SW mere where
last saw ♂ I am watching. When ♂ (#1-mine) stopped
then ♂ #2 started again. Enough time between.
Probably to get back & forth, but doesn't seem likely.
0937- ♂ #1 began singing
0945. ♂ #1 still singing, but sounds as if he moved
slightly to N. Now fairly sure that ♂ #2 is due to ventriloquistic
effect of song of ♂ #1.
0950 - ♂ #1 silent:
