18 LL Wolf 1964 June 29 Aimophila cassini Welder Wildlife Foundation, San Patricio Co. Texas To near or on ground for 10-15 sec. then took up to 2' (3-4' below canopy) where sat chipping. A bird flew past at 30-40 feet up & my bird flew off just above shrubs & then rose to 20+ feet when in same flight line & followed bird for 50-75 yds. to E & then dropped into grass as other bird continued on to NE until lost from sight. Probably this same bird as I am watching flew from where #4? had given chit. fl. song to come into terr.#3. So perhaps only 3 terr. in the vicinity. 0835- have pair of birds chipping & sitting up in tops of mesquite in restricted area in terr.#3 (E corner). #7 suddenly flew off to NW & chased another bird - then circled around to 5+ sang from W or SW edge of terr. then back to E edge where sitting up chipping; #7 flew off to SE & disappeared. #7 then disappeared while I was writing notes, but can hear occas. chips & some soft chittering. 0839- #7#1 gave ch. fl.song. #7#2 - regular song. 0850- adult not into view so I walked up to that area. #7 flew off to NW from NE of where he went down. as came to area of thick mesquite 2-3' high where birds seemed to content set their activities & flew off to SE 20-30 yards & was lost to sight in the shrubbery. After 2-3 minutes of stumbling around a young bird with 3/4"+ grown tail flew up to tops of shrubs moved to S for 5'+ & dropped into another mesquite clump (4-5' high). #7 fluthered around in there for 1'+min. before flushing young right at my feet. flew off to SW giving soft series of chip notes. female flew in & landed just behind young. She perched in top of
