LLW014 1964 Aimophila cassini June 29 Welder Wildlife Foundation, San Patricio Co., Texas 0659, ferr #3 - sitting on top of 4' mesquite in clump - preening. a F-flumesed Painted Bunting flew in + dis placed the sparrow. sparrows flew to NW 20 feet when set in top of another shrub. quiet; occas. preening. 0704 - same bird still sitting - top of mesquite. another bird appears near top of shrub 40-50 yds. to W. flies over toward my bird about 8-10 feet above ground. 4-6 feet above level of shrubs. veers off to N as 20 - 25 yds to W + as my birds flies off to dearer shrub clump to S[illegible]. 0715 - walked over to when incoming adult flew. found chipping adult, occas. preening; after 4+ min. in which once dipped toward ground, flew to W. followed in 2-3 sec. by a 2nd. 2nd flew chased by 1st year or Painted Bunting. Both flew back to E 1/2 way to where clam. sat on top dead branch of blackberry + at least one was chipping. One disappeared + [illegible] other flew back to W. (0723). 0723.5- #4 (?) gave clit. flight song. [illegible]. possibly is same bird as heard giving it before. 0732 - adult (fem. #3) flew out from SE corner + to NW. followed immediately by 1st pr. of bunting, while caught up + two birds came together + dropped into mesquite. a 2nd adult flew in + let in top about where two had dropped in. 15+ sec. later bunting chased this bird 5-10' then mesquite, but no apparent contact. 0755 - adult chipping. hopped into top of mesquite with green larva ~ 3/4
