Aimophila cassini
June 28 Welder Wildlife Foundation, San Patricio Co., Texas
0740 (terr. 3) - bird flew in from W. lot in top of 4 blackberry then dropped down on back side. Looked to have food in bill.
When I approached flushed from 10-15 yards further toward SW trood. Lit in 3' away on bad g leaf worked down to near bar + started toward interior then out to exterior + up to top. As I moved around over sometime flushed it flew for 50 due west of me (50 yds.) Set in top of 5' blackberry ground.
When I shifted positions for better view flew to W + disappeared below level of bushes.
food
0810 - found bird (terr. 3) with green lava in bill. Under mesquite partly hidden from view but bird was at least mandibulating it + seemed to be flailing it. Several times worked 1' up in mesquite carrying leave then to ground. Up after 15 sec + bill wiped on pencil 6-8" up. Changed pencils + bill wiped again. Then back to ground.
Foraged in close to base of mesquite in shade - perhaps as this was side away from me. Only seen every 5-10 sec. After 1/2 min I walked toward mesquite. It flew up to cast from tree 20 feet to SW, gave chit, flight song. Then a 2nd bird flurried at any feet + flew off to NE. Bird that I assume is same or gave another chit-flight song + lit 75-100 yards to east of mesquite from where flushed.
flight song
0830 bird flew across road from N (east end of terr. 3) into terr #5 then to SW 20-30 yards farther into terr. 5, chit flight song to NW to edge of terr. #1 (cast) then back across road (to N) to 75 yds. N of road. Then disappeared then in terr. #3.
08r2 - adult flew from circle area of terr. 1 across road to N. + disappeared into terr. 3.
