Lh Wolf 1964 June 19 Himophila aurivalis Luis S. Boykin Springs, Jasper Co., Texas No sign of birds when I arrived at potential nest area at 0603. Heard one song from NE at 0606. Woods is very quiet except for occasional Line Warbler songs. Heed sing 4 songs at 0611 + 0613 - woods light. No to very light breeze. Sun out shining in woods yet. grass wet. 0625 - wind begins blowing low clouds from S. often observe swm. 0640 - saw first lit up fret fly around me. 0700 - heard several songs from N of "nest" and, but stcel no sign of the species. 0712 - heard or singing. Tried playback; so came in to 100 feet + sang 5-6 songs. Then silent 15 ± sec. to SW. then flew almost directly east + began singing. Quiet again at 0715. Still no sign of &. 0722 - or singing to N of me 100 ± yards. 0734 - still no sign of ? so leaving this spot near "nest". 0749 - or bird flew into dead limbs of pine (15 feet) + changed directions or perch + flicked tail. Chipping 2, 3, 4, Bird then flew from ground near base of shrub carrying large piece of dead grass. Flew 30+ feet to dead shrub where sat for 10-25 sec - then flew 20 feet & dropped into grass. Was in for 30 ± sec. during which time or sang one soft song. F out to small pine 15 feet N. of root. Then back to base of shrub - & another piece of grass back to pine + then to grass 25 sec. during which or sang one soft song. I stayed on ground. Then to small pine & back to shrub. With more grass flew to another small pine 5 feet from nest.
