LL Wolf 1964 Aimophila cassini June 25 12 mi SSW. Refugio, Refugio Co., Texas Encountered 5+ singing ♂♂ in open mesquite-like grassland. ♂♂ spaced at ~100 yard ± intervals in areas where clumps of legume + hackberry (Celtis) were spaced 20-30 feet + more. When closer sparrows did not occur. Trees (shrubs) are up to 10-25 feet tall. When pursued the birds fly from hackberry to hackberry (occasionally mesquite) + land on outside, then rapidly flutter + hop into interior. Usually flush out well before I approached close to bush, but infrequently would stick until I was right on top of them. Found singing ♂♂ - watched several giving flight songs - also a gravid ♀ with a yolk in her oviduct + a 2nd large follicle. Also young fled grown + from part to completely then the p.p. molt. The laying ♀ must be on at least 3rd brood.- possibly a third. June 26 Welder Wildlife Foundation, San Patricio Co., Texas 0610 - while recording ♂♂ another bird (♀?) flew onto 3 foot perch + gave series of chip notes. Then flew closer to ♂♂. ♂♂ + another bird flew by + ♀? began series of chitter notes, which were followed by series from ♂ or other birds. Then ♀ flew closer + they chase - not sure who chasing whom. ♂ came back + sat on 3' perch + gave several soft thuttering series. Then darted out across road in flight song pattern as giving the chittering call. Almost became warble at top of arc.
