LL Wolf 1964 Aimophila botteri July 10 Laguna Atascosa Wildlife Refuge, Cameron Co., Texas about halfway between Spartina + mesquite. Hops back into huisache + composite cover at edge of Spartina then back out to bare area. Chipping softly + regularly. Hops over to apex of grass - short flight last 2 feet where sits chipping softly. Then silent + moves into grass to nest. 0935 - adult near or on nest chirped for 45+ sec. + then was quiet. 0938 - chase ~ 30 yds S. of road going from W to E. weaving flight to one bird closely following (1-2') other. & #8 samp from S. of road after chase, didn't see outcome as vision blocked by bushes. 0950 - adult with green Orthopteran in hackberry apparently flown on ground nearby. lit on 5 dead branch. 0952.5 - flew over to edge g Spartina + lit in huisache area. Moved out onto + across bare ground. Chipping continually + occasional wing flicks + tail slightly spread. into grass & to nest at 0954.5 silent. 0957.5 - near chirping a other adult flew into mesquite across road ~6+ yds to SE of hackberry. land 2 6-7 'up (tree 1275') on dead stub of limbs. Sits chipping. 1002.5 - flies to hackberry where lands, ~ 2' up + drops immediately down into grass. where chips for 30+ sec. + then silent. 1006 - adult flies to SW across road from vicinity g nest. + sings from far top branch of 6+ foot hackberry on outer edge of clump of hackberry. 1015 - heard few chips from near nest. 1019 - more chips. adult just off nest. flies to ~10+ yds W of nest where in small huisaceous bush (1' tree) chipping. walks across bare ground to near Spartina & then flies to hackberry where sits chipping. At first had mouth open as if cooling.
