Amophila botteri
July 10
Laguna Atascosa Refuge, Cameron Co., Texas
Finally she went to base of 1' hickory or Acacia farnesiana at N edge of Spartina. Thrust head downward several times + came up without food in 6:11. Then hopped around chipping for 10-15 sec. + flew back to hackberry where bill wiped several lines. Then flew off to SE across road.
0807 - Adult into hackberry from S carrying food - chipping. Changed positions several times on hackberry + flew to SW to land near where P had earlier (by 0800 I found nest at S apex of clump of crabgrass). It also hopped around in Acacia + composite vegetation along N edge of Spartina (12-16" high). Worked out onto bare ground ~ 1/2 way to crab grass clump several times only to return to edge of Spartina, carrying food + chipping continuously.
0817 - finally across barana + chipping food stopped for 1-2 min. Then started again.
0825 - adult from out of nest into hackberry (which is 20+ yds to NE of nest) + then across road to S. Almost immediately replaced at hackberry by #2 adult carrying food. It dropped right after landing in vegetated part of hackberry on far side from me or else to ground (hidden). Can hear it chipping.
0828 - adults both silent.
0838 - adult flew out from nest + across road to S, heard chipping + then singing from there. Probably was #1.
0850 - adult carrying food left at N edge of Spartina + out into bare area a short distance. Then flew up into mesquite to SE.
