LL Wolf 1964 17 Aimophila botterii July 9 Laguna Atascosa Refuge, Cameron Co., Texas. Going to drop into grass. Circles around & lands 1 foot below & just below grass level. Hovered & moved up wind before finally landing. Both sat chirping. 0847 - ♂ from another small patch next to ♀ hovers over 3-4 feet horizontal distance & finally drops into grass. During this hovering body held ~60° with horizontal. ♀ hovers near 2nd patch & also drops into grass. ♂ up onto magnolia branch at grass level & then back to ground. 0850 - adult up to top of #2. Then hover flight to drop into grass 10 feet to SW. Still infrequent (occas. regular & frequent) soft chirping - probably ♀ working to nest on ground. 0858 - both sexes quiet - ♂#7 buzzing actively. 0907 - ♂#2 into penultimate, at top of 7' branch. Sat chirping & gave several song notes. Then dropped to ground to SW in weeds along road cut. Hovered just above weeds before dropping in - then silent. 0923 - as I left #2 to look for #7, ♂#2 flew up into patch (a) & began singing & chirping. Then down to #4 - followed one bird for a 1 hour - only saw occasionally & for short times. Nest + eggs of pair #2 rest faces to NW. 21.5 x 15.8 - egg 21.1 x 15.5 - egg } bluish-white. 19.4 x 15.6 - Mylothrus egg. Flushed both birds from nest at 1030. Not sure of relation of each to nest but both went off from site. Both died young were gone & Cowbird egg was pipped. Removed Cowbird egg to be sure of identification.
