15 HL WOLF 1964 Amophila botteri July 9 Laguna Atascosa Refuge, Cameron Co., Texas Arrived at Laguna Atascosa area at 0530. Spent early morning determining location of pairs. Two territorial disputes: first between #5 + #7. ♂#1♀#7 flushed from near road + flew SE 30± yds. Soon heard rapid chips & noted 3rd bird coming from E. ♂#7 to♂#5 flew into same mesquite - ♂#7 higher than #5. one or both gave rapid series of chips running into churring note then ♂#5 flew back to E + ♂#7 flew to S. where ♀ had moved in interior. Other involved ♂♀ 4+6. ♂#7+♀ 4 flushed from N side of road to 20±yds to S. then flew to 30+yds S. a 3rd bird flushed from W of these birds & just S. of road into mesquite ~30+yds. S. of road. ♂#7 immediately flew over & lit higher than 3rd bird. Assumed posture with tail cocked at 60°, wings slightly held out from body, plumage slightly fluffed, + bill pointing toward #6. little motion. Then rapid chase off to SE - couldn't tell which one initiated chase. ♀#7 flew slightly to S & disappeared. Dispute between #5 also involved the churring type vocalization + aggressive posturing, but no chase. 0653 - flushed pair #4 from Spartina grass. Flew with pumping flight to dead branch of mesquite. One assumed tail cocked, wings out - head up posture. Other sat normally. No calling. One higher up (sitting normally) dropped back into grass.
