Aimophila botterii
July 8 Laguna Atascosa Refuge, Cameron Co., Texas
0831 - out from nest to #4 not carrying a food sac. flew over to #7 where worked to E side - sang short version of continuous song + flew off to E at 0833.5.
0841 - adult ~ 1/2 way up in perch #3 chirping, does not have anything in bill + bill-wiped once. moved slightly higher in Agave (total height 3-3 1/2') when sat chirping + preening.
0855 - Adult still in #3 chirping + preening no sign of other adult. flew across road to S, gives series of continuous songs.
0856 - adult from #3 to #4. when sitting on dead stub 18" up. chirping occasionally. then up to 2 1/2' up on another dead branch in area of #4. still chirping, but not as frequently (~4 sec.) to tail bowing flicking. facing to W (away from nest) body + tail in straight line at approx. 30° above horizontal.
0901.5 - bird flew from #4 to #3 when perches ~ 1/3 way up in Agave at tip of leaf.
0903 - bird flies 75 ± yds. to SE to land just across road in weeds, along both sides of road weeds have grown up where hitch-hiker made fence removing brush-grass (mostly composites).
0905 - adult flies in from E chirping rapidly + lands in #1 when continues chirping on E side. flight was direct but wing strokes were short. from east side of #1 flew over to #4 carrying food. then disappears + is quiet. (I looked away toward-up notes).
wind now continues + from 5-10 mph - slightly gusty.
presumably adult went to nest + either stayed on nest or slipped off quietly while I was writing notes.
