Aimophila boweri
Laguna Atascosa Refuge, Cameron Co., Texas.
0545-600 adult up on dead upper branches of 3' Lycium
chipping + going thru bill cocking + spreading, wing flecking, + slight
ruffling of plumage. Bill wiped in short time + spent most of time
preening. Changed perchus several times but only once into branches
of live, 7' mesquite.
0600- down to ground until 0601. Then back up into Lycium where
preened + gave excitement display again.
0605.5 - down to ground around base of Lycium area here is
covered with composites + grass other than bunchgrass.
0607- Back up into Lycium where chipping excitedly with small
green Orthoptera in bill. Finally flew to dead bush 10+ feet to W
of Lycium, dropped down behind + came up without the food. Did
not bill wipe. Then back to Lycium in upper branches on W side.
Changed to E side & I saw movement at live base of Lycium + Cactus
When worked up to top. Sparrow then displaced it from one perch
to then a 2nd from which were flew to an Agave 25± ft. to SW.
Followed by sparrow, which did not displace were a 3rd time
but sat quietly in the Agave. Another sparrow flew by going SW
& lit 20± feet to WSW of Agave - my bird flew over to nearly same
spot with rather fluttery flight. Heard chatter "reunion" call as
bird landing - sounded like single bird. Both sitting above ground
in clumps of bunchgrass. Own flies off to W as hear another
bird giving tzeek notes down them. Then back. At meantime other
has obtained a washing stick-like organism which is carried in
bill. 1st then flew to E 75+ yds, where singing as
