LLW04 1964 2 Aimophila aestualis June 18 Laurin Boykin Springs, Jasper Co., Texas Moved to S. myself & tried playback again. Could hear one bird chittering nearby. Played again. B? flew up to dead limb 20 feet above ground & 60 feet away. Then flew over my head as I moved parabola into position. Gave two-three songs run together from perch 25'feet up - again a dead limb of pine. Then flew off to S- 3-4min later heard series of 4 or 5 songs about 50 yards to E. Tried more playback with no luck, except bird chipping "warby"-couldn't suit. At 0705 heard 3 songs to N. Area is stand of long leaf pine 30-60 feet tall with nearly continuous ground layer of grass. Shrubs + young trees - mainly sycamores - scattered thru area. Also much poison ivy. One clump of 20-25 feet tall cals which have not been used by sparrows. The extent of the area utilized by pair so far is about 200-300 yards long. Width up to 80 yards but generally move along fairly straight as line. 0928 - ?(?) flushed from near bough, pine + small shrub. B? sang one song. This back at N. end of area where heard singing about 0630 this morning. Flight of ? was floppy with tail elevated & pumping. Dropped into clump of shrubs 50 feet to N+ disappeared. B? when coming in to playback shifted orientation on perch by 25-30° + fluked wings while keeping tail elevated at
