LL Wolf 1964 Anaphila botterii July 7 Laguna Atascosa Refuge, Cameron Co., Texas Only found these birds in bundgrass - short mesquite association. In pinnery range area encountered on scattered solitary birds, but many Cassin Sparrows. Around Laguna Atascosa ~2mi. W of head quarters found colony of 6-8 ???? along the road. Seemed to be in pairs but saw as many as 7 together. Watched several long chase flights ending in short mesquites. Saw one bird perch in mesquite on bare limb with another bird lower + 2? feet away. 1st cocked tail ~ 20o + lifted head, held wings slightly out from body + fluffed plumage slightly. Shook wings. Vocalizations ?? Probably a pre-copulatory display, but when 2nd bird approached both flew off. Heard several chitter "chits" as birds lit together (6-8" apart) in short mesquites. Also similar-scare when resident ? flew in close to chase off intruding ??. Another song which we recorded after playing back the song ending in a trill was a continuous series of notes similar to beginning of regular song but never breaking into full. Seemed to be much softer than advertising out one song. Also heard several flight songs - all of same type as advert. song. ???. The one was just a rapid series of soft chip notes as bird flew away. Flight song in this species is given on horizontal flight + does not involve the abrupt vertical component of A. cassini. Have only heard advertising song otherwise from elevated perches. Mostly mesquite from 3-20 feet tall.
