LLW014 1963 Aimophila betherii July 23 He arrives to tree on N. edge of his territory. ♂ 4 then sings two full songs & goes back to chirping. ♂ 1 sings 3-4 songs & flies back to east of perch left 2-3 minutes earlier. ♂ 2 + 4 both sing several times. ♂ 1 back to shrub from which left for tree. 0639 - ♂ 4 has left his perch. Day is very overcast - rained last night. Breeze has come up at 0640. 0642 - ♂ 1 still on shrub singing, all other post quiet. ♂ 1 occasionally changes direction on perch so facing either ♂ 2 or 3 + ♂ 4. Songs: 4/min 0645 - sang 4 songs in one minute, changed position twice during that time. from 0645-0650 ♂ 4 was back up on perch, but not singing. flew silently down to ground. 0650 - ♂ 2 singing to SE of ♂ 1 so far no sign of ♀ 0653 - ♂ 4 back up but not singing - is 100 yards to NW of ♂ 1. 0655 - ♂ 4 begins singing from near top of dead shrub 2½ feet high, almost due west of ♂ 1's tree. 0655 - ♂ 1 left perch for a min & returned. To my ears song of ♂ 1 very stereotyped. may have added few notes or subtracted but were notes still present. So just added or subtracted from basic pattern, no change on that, stereotyped song
