July 23 Canion de Lobos, 5 mi. E. Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico
0810 - heard squeal version duet essentially the same as L. pilo
fascus, but shorter. Then watched one foraging in shrub + vine
tangle in wooded gully about 8 feet above ground. Moved thru
vegetation rather deliberately -- peering about.
0940 - saw pair - hear 33333 aa note repeated twice from gully
then silence. then tweet art followed by 333333 duet. Quinto
July 27 Canion de Lobos, 5 mi. E. Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico
0640 - ? sitting at top of vine tangle in wooded gully -- peering
in sun. & singing from just branchled. Just after & flew in
direction of 3° duet squeal of pair version heard. Loud then
faded off then loud again.
0910 - watched adult forage thru partly defoliated tree -- worked in
canopy up to 10 feet above ground sitting + peering then peeling &
moving on. Suddenly a 2nd bird flew in + 1st dropped down to shrubs
& squeal duet ending in chatter.
August 4 5 mi. E. Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico
0830 - sharp clipping by adult just off road. joined by a 2nd adult
+ heard squeal. Found nest about 4 feet above ground at top fork
of shrub. Vine also growing up shrub. surrounded by nearly
closed canopy at 10-12 foot level + 18± foot tree provides shade.
Also shade from vine & shrub leaves. Nest of coarse twigs + grasses on
exterior, lining of finer, short stems ≤ 1mm diameter. 2 young with
sheathed feathers on all tracts & beginning to erupt on renipes, + main
thunk tracts.
