6k west 1964 Muscicora inficata July 8 Laguna Atascosa Refuge, Cameron Co., Texas 1530 - watched adult (?) by tail length) fly down to crushed shell road carrying large winged grasshopper. alighted on road & began to beat grasshopper on shell fragments holding insect by various parts of body. bird twisted head, usually to right & rapped insect sharply on substrate usually in both directions. Several times lost insect + flew off ground 6-12" to recover it. Finally apparently killed grasshopper+ was able to flip it in an 1-2" from bill to change position in bill. Took 1 minute before finally able to swallow it head first. Part still visible in ½ opened mouth before final swallow. Bird then sat on road with bill open + wings slightly spread from body. Picked at substrate & had 2 small pieces of shell in bill at different times. Presumably swallowed them for grit.
