LLW014 1963 Ortunus superciliosa August 6 I mi. N. Tres Cumbres, Morelos, Mexico conifer-bunchgrass. #2180 - beetle fragments in stomach. 2178 - most on sides of neck, vanupt, + upper tail coverts. egg was white w red-brown spots - heartat + forming wreath on large end. some on smaller end. stomach w beetle fragments. 2172 - stomach - mostly insect fragments - little vegetable matter. 2183. stomach - insect fragments. 2192 - stomach - insect fragments Birds in bunch grass meadows with scattered conifers. When pursued generally take refuge in the conifers. Flight is direct with tail slightly elevated, often glide for long distances. Use rock outcrops as lookouts + song posts. Also sing from exposed perches on dead stubs, or dead limbs in the conifers. Once saw two birds land side by side & then give chattering fine apparently both birds. Then separate by 5-6 feet + one bird give call. duet? Only song heard was the harsh, chattering trill. Call note is sharp "chink." Apparently these birds also duet as do Aimophila sparrows. Pursued groups of 3-5 trying to collect eating group. Never successful. It seemed that more than 2 adults
