L Wolf 1963 Cassicus melanicterus July 25 6 mi. S.W. La Huerta, Jalisco km. 1114 on Mex-80 Several nests are under construction in tree across from camp. One (1) nearly completed (2) just started at end of branch on outer limb. Pair lit at nest 2 - 8 o at point when nest attached + ? / foot above. O preened then turned 60 deg bowed with head below feet + wings + tail spread. At same time gave raspy flying call. Repeated procedure facing 180 deg around after F flew to tree hanging 3 feet away. This put her more on level w/ O. About 15 sec between displays. Both birds then flew off - one 100 feet behind other. It seems that O + F are active at each of the nests. I cannot be sure that it is always same bird. 0841 - pair (O+F) flew in from SW to nest 1. F carrying long grass - O following by 20-30 yards. F lit in nest + immediately disappeared. O flew by nest w/ wings in dihedral + tail slightly spread uttering funny call. Lit on level of nest 1, 5 ft away. 0850 - F in from SW w/ small piece of grass, dives directly into nest. After adding material flies off again to SW. Nests are approx. 75 feet up in 100 foot tree along stream. Tree is at edge of group of 4-6 such large trees all of different species. 0905 - F in from S.W. or sitting in top of dead 20 foot [illegible] follows as she flies over. She directly to nest.
