June 24 Edwin N. Benson Hwy, Wilmot Rd. Tucson Pima Co., Arizona
Pair of adults feeding 2 young which are as
large as adults. Note of young is higher than
adults. These were the only individuals of this
species seen in the area.
June 25: Same locale.
bird flew from bare limbs of mesquite 3 feet above ground
& tried to catch large blue wasp which was flying just
above ground. Missed wasp & lit on ground watching
wasp fly about 2 feet away. Wasp circled 3-4 more
times & lit on ground. Bird watched it walking on
ground for several seconds then reached over &
caught a grasshopper off ground flew up to mesquite
branch to eat prey. Seemed to have to beat prey against
branch before swallowing.
