Llasof 1963 Aechmolophus mexicanus August 4 9am E. Cuernavaca Morelos Caton de Lobos. Heard this species calling (what) up hill from trail. Tried to approach to collect, but it stayed just out of sight in dense brush ahead. On returning to trail Saw nest hanging about 3 feet above ground in clearing But with closed canopy - with ground vegetation + no dense brush. Nest well constructed, but thin - could see through bottom + hanging at end of live branch. Supported by spider web attached to three twigs + some leaves. 2 Stub-tailed young in nest. Nest ~60 feet uphill from trail. Waited for adult to return. Came silently about 4-6 feet up through dense underbrush. Left when I moved & began giving whist call. Moved around an about 30-40 feet away. Stayed 5-15 feet above ground - landing on bare twigs often in open sometimes in dense tangle. Always below canopy. Several times chased another bird while giving raspy, chattering call. Other prob. old F. While calling, bird occupied my attention & 2nd silent bird came to nest (30 feet from me) & fed young. Collected + was F & c brood patch. F continued calling intermittently for 5+ minutes + then rose silent. Presumably left area. About 10 minutes after I collected F & I heard young calling softly from nest. Sounded like very soft version of what call of F. Collected nest + young. Nest clean of feces material + in excellent condition.
