August 29 San Blas Nayarit, Mexico
Up at 06:15. Had breakfast + drove just Egtown + walked up to fort. Took some pictures of town + swamps. Drove out to Playa Matachum + watched shorebirds. Several landings were showing aggression toward nearby individuals. Approach in horizontal position with bill pointing down at 10° below horizontal. Back feathers fluffed wings slightly held out. Several chases were for 10+ yds. + involved short flights. Why chase of one bird so far with others around ?? Picked up a long-dead Brown Pelican + saved the skeleton.
In the afternoon took a trip thru the mangroves to a fresh water spring which supplies much of the water for the swamps near town. Saw few birds other than Common Egrets + Green Herons. Clouded up by mid-afternoon but no rain.
Wrote notes, had supper, + visited the town. Plan to leave for Sonora early in the morning.
August 30 San Blas, Nayarit to 16 mi. N. Navojoa, Sonora (km 1912), Mexico
Up at 04:45. Picked car + left for Sonora. Soon after arriving on main highway north stopped for breakfast. Spent rest of day driving. Became more arid as went north. In Sonora it is much drier than at this time last year + the herb layer vegetation has not made much appearance + the ground seems almost as bare as I remember it prior to the summer rains in 1964.
Was cloudy in early morning time passed thru light sprinkles in Nayarit. Cleared up + was hot + sunny. Ran out of gas < 1 mile S. of Navojoa. Arrived at camping site at 1700. Went out + took pictures. Wrote notes, had supper + set up camp, then to bed.
